Moving your domain to Havra

Your domain is your web address. A transfer moves its registration from your current registrar (like GoDaddy or Squarespace) to Havra, so it renews on time and never lapses on an expired card. Your website stays up, your email keeps working, and you stay the legal owner.

Unlock the domain and turn off DNSSEC at your current registrar, send the auth code, and the registration moves to Havra in about five to seven days. Your site and email stay up the whole time.

Move your domain

  1. Check it's at least 60 days old. A domain registered or transferred in the last 60 days can't move yet. Don't edit the contact details before a move: at several registrars that restarts the 60 days.
  2. Turn off the registrar lock. It's a switch in your registrar account that stops the domain from moving. Your registrar's steps are below.
  3. Turn off DNSSEC if it's on. It has to be off during the move. Your rep can turn it back on afterwards.
  4. Get your auth code. Registrars also call it an EPP code, transfer key or transfer code. Treat it like a one-time password.
  5. Send your rep four things: the domain name (like yourbusiness.com), the auth code, confirmation that the lock and DNSSEC are off, and that you can read email at the domain's registrant address.
  6. Approve the transfer email. Your registrar emails you to confirm or reject the move. Confirm it so it finishes sooner. Most transfers complete in five to seven days.

Once your rep starts the transfer, you can follow it on the Domain tab of your dashboard, and enter the auth code there instead of emailing it. Havra never stores the code: it goes straight to the registry when the transfer is submitted.

Steps at your registrar

Every registrar boils down to the same moves: lock off, DNSSEC off, get the code. Menus change often. If a label doesn't match, look for Domains, Domain settings, Security or Transfer, and ask your rep if you're stuck for more than a few minutes.

Squarespace Domains
  1. Sign in at squarespace.com. If your domain came from Google Domains, choose Continue with Google with the account that paid for it.
  2. Open your domains dashboard and click the domain.
  3. Switch Domain Lock off.
  4. In the domain's DNS settings, turn DNSSEC off if it's on.
  5. Click Request transfer code. Squarespace emails it within 24 hours to the registrant address. The subject starts with "Auth code for."

You don't need to turn domain privacy off. You can't edit DNS while a transfer is pending.

GoDaddy
  1. Open your Domain Portfolio and click the domain.
  2. Under Transfer, switch the lock off. It can take up to 90 minutes to apply.
  3. Turn DNSSEC off under Domain Settings, then DNS, then DNSSEC, if it's on.
  4. Choose Transfer to Another Registrar, then Continue with transfer.
  5. Copy the authorization code. GoDaddy also emails it to the registrant address.

Domains bought in a bundle can carry a 120 day wait. If you use Domain Protection, you'll verify with a code first.

Namecheap
  1. Open Domain List and click Manage next to the domain.
  2. On Sharing & Transfer, go to Transfer Out and click Unlock next to Domain Lock.
  3. Turn DNSSEC off on the Advanced DNS tab if it's on.
  4. Ask for the auth code in Transfer Out. Namecheap emails it to the registrant address, which may not be your sign-in address.
HostGator
  1. In the Customer Portal, click Domains and pick the domain.
  2. On Overview, switch Domain Lock off (you must be the Primary or Tech user).
  3. On Move & Access, click Request Auth Code and confirm.
  4. The code is emailed to the registrant address. It's case sensitive, so paste it rather than retyping.

HostGator doesn't document a DNSSEC step. If DNSSEC is on, look for DNSSEC or DS records in the domain's DNS settings, or ask their support.

Spaceship
  1. Open your Domain List, select the domain, and open its Transfer tab.
  2. Turn the domain lock off.
  3. Turn DNSSEC off under Advanced DNS if it's on.
  4. Request the authorization code on the Transfer tab. It expires, so send it to your rep the same day.
Bluehost
  1. In the Bluehost Portal, click Domains and the domain.
  2. On Overview, switch Domain Lock off.
  3. Turn DNSSEC off on the DNS tab if it's on. It can take a day or two to spread.
  4. Click Request Auth Code in the Domain Lock section and confirm. The code is emailed to the registrant address within 24 hours.

Change nameservers before you start if you need to: DNS can't be edited once a transfer is running.

Wix
  1. Open Domains, click the Domain Actions icon, and choose Edit contact info.
  2. Next to Privacy and DNSSEC protection, click Show more and turn it off. This switches both off in one step.
  3. From Domain Actions, choose Transfer away from Wix, then Transfer Domain.
  4. Wix emails the EPP code to the registrant address.

If you use Wix business email, tell your rep: the mail records need to be added again after the move.

Cloudflare Registrar
  1. Open Manage Domains, find the domain and select Manage.
  2. Under Configuration, select Unlock, then Confirm and Unlock.
  3. Copy the auth code shown on screen.
  4. Turn DNSSEC off under Configuration to avoid a rejection partway through.

You can approve the transfer yourself in Cloudflare to finish it right away.

Porkbun
  1. Click ACCOUNT, then Domain Management.
  2. Click the green padlock next to the domain. Grey means unlocked.
  3. If DNSSEC is on, remove the records under Details.
  4. Choose Get Authorization Code from Details.

Porkbun lets you approve the transfer out under Details, then Registrar Transfer, which finishes it in hours.

IONOS
  1. Open Domains, then Renewal & Transfer.
  2. Switch Domain transfer lock off.
  3. Disable DNSSEC in the domain's DNS settings. It takes at least eight hours to apply, so do it first.
  4. Turn off private registration if it's on.
  5. Click Show Authorization Code.
Hostinger
  1. In hPanel, open Domains and click Manage next to the domain.
  2. Switch Transfer lock off, and leave it off until the transfer is done.
  3. Switch Privacy Protection off. Hostinger requires it.
  4. Delete the DNSSEC record on the DNSSEC tab. Hostinger requires this too.
  5. Reveal the authorization code on the domain overview.

Answer Hostinger's confirmation email promptly. An unanswered one can get the transfer denied.

Network Solutions
  1. Click Domains, then open the domain (Settings or Manage).
  2. On Security, switch Domain Lock off.
  3. Turn privacy off under Contacts if it's on.
  4. On Security, click Request Auth Code. It's emailed to the registrant within 24 hours.

Only the account's Primary Contact can unlock the domain. Codes are case sensitive.

Somewhere else

Sign in, open the domain's settings, turn off anything called Domain Lock, Transfer Lock or Registrar Lock, turn off DNSSEC, and look for an authorization code. If you can't find it, ask their support: "Please unlock my domain and send me the authorization code so I can transfer it to another registrar." They're required to give it to you.

Good to know

  • Your site stays up. Before the transfer, Havra copies your DNS records and puts them back after, so visitors see no difference. Don't edit DNS yourself mid-transfer.
  • Your email keeps working. It uses the same DNS records, which are preserved.
  • You keep your paid time. Most transfers add a year to what you had left. If your domain renews within 45 days, wait until the renewal finishes.
  • Cost depends on the ending. A .com isn't priced like a .io. Your rep gives you the price before anything is submitted.
  • Domain privacy can usually stay on. IONOS and Hostinger require it off, as noted above.
  • If a transfer is rejected, it's usually a mistyped code, a lock that came back on, or a missed email. You'll need a fresh auth code. Your rep sees the same details and will help.
